Kitchen accessories: Top 10 kitchen scales

If you’re doing home cooking or baking, then the chances are you’ll need a reliable set of kitchen scales. But do you prefer traditional designs or a funky modern set of scales?

Whatever your preference, there are a host of different kitchen scales available, from the purely functional to the decorative. If you don’t have much room in your kitchen you can buy some smart scales which can easily be stored in a drawer, or you can buy the old traditional scales which can be left out and displayed on a kitchen worktop.

Undecided about which we prefer, we’ve put together a top ten of our favourite kitchen scales. Which would you buy?

1. The Colourworks Electric Kitchen Scale

The Colourworks Electric Kitchen Scale comes in blue or pink, both costing £17 from Sterling Furniture. The glass platform is wipe clean only. It has an add ‘n’ weigh function, metric and imperial electronic display and worktop protecting non-scratch feet.

The scale can weigh items up to 5kg and is small enough to fit in a drawer, while bright enough to look good out.

2. Avon weighing scale

Traitional in design the Avon weighing scale has a cast aluminium base and comes in either cream or chrome. It is manually calibrated and although weights are not included they do sell a good selection.

You can choose either brass or chrome weights in the shape of bells or churns, metric or imperial. The scales on their own cost £65.96 from The Cooks Kitchen.

3. Salter Best of British electronic scale

Union Jacks are all the rage this year and the electronic scale is not to be left out. This Salter Best of British electronic scale has a glass platform.

It has a liquid measuring function, and meaures in imperial and metric meaurements, up to a maximum capacity of 5kg / 11lbs / 5 litres. Argos has reduced the price of the scalem down from £22.99 to £16.99.

4. Lakeland Add and Weigh scale

This Lakeland Add and Weigh scale is really well priced – £10.99 from Lakeland. This is great if you want to keep all the ingredients in the measuring dish. As each ingredient is aded you can put the scale back to zero.

The two litre bowl is bigger than most and means mixing can be done in the dish, saving on the washing up.

5. Guzzini mechanical Sfera kitchen scales

This Guzzini mechanical Sfera kitchen scale were designed by Roberto Pezzetta and is quite unique in design. The fun looking red scale is in the shape of a ball and consist of two half-spheres.

The transparent side acts as the weighing bowl and the other side is the weighing device. Red Candy sell the scales for £35.19.

6. Salter sweetie kitchen scale

This is the type of scale usually used for measuring fruit and vegetables in shops, and, less often now sweets. The chrome manual scale has a large dial and top-mounted zero adjuster for easy measuring.

John Lewis sells the Salter sweetie kitchen scale for £50.

7. Digital spoon scale

These digitial spoon scale are really designed for measuring small amounts which are so small we tend to just estimate.

There are two spoons, each a different six. The spoons will weigh up to 300g in 0.1g and 10½oz in 1/200oz increments and the LCD screen shows the weight. Lazybone sells these digital scales for £20.99.

8. Salter 1031 scoop kitchen scale

This Salter 1031 scoop electronic kitchen scale has a scoop with an ergonomic handle, making it easy to scoop. As well as this it has an add and weigh zero function and an aquatronic function for measuring liquids.

It is a very neat and simple looking scale and costs £31.50 from Our Weigh.

9. Baby pink retro scale

The attraction of these scales is the colour. The baby pink gives a right retro feel about the scale. Alternatively if pink is not your colour they also stock it in cream and red.
