The hall is the one room in the house which is most forgotten about. Coats are hung up and shoes are abandoned, but most of us spend little time making it look nice.
Even if your hall is small there are still accessories and furniture you can buy which will make the space more appealing looking. We have put together our top 10 hall accessories, some of which are useful, some of which are decorative and some of which are both.
White Cottage Living sells this adorable looking white storage bench for £155. In a sizeable hall a seat is often needed, for sitting to put on shoes in particular. The bench provides seating as well as space for storage. Two baskets sit neatly undeneath, handy for storing shoes or for tidying away any other hall clutter.
For our second item we have chosen something completely different in style. This line of chickens draught excluder is very much of the country cottage style. Ideal Moments sells a good selection of shabby chic accessories. Five chickens sit on the draught excluder and there is a plaque in the middle reading, ‘A lovely lady and a grumpy old man live here’. It is easy enough to remove the plaque if that part doesn’t appeal. The price is £24.61 and the draught excluder is 71cm long and weighs 2,500g.
It is inevitable that we would feature a coat rack on the list! This hall mirror and coat rack from MijMoj is a bit different from many coat racks. It has a slimline mirror which really just serves the purpose of letting you have a quick check in the mirror before running out the door. Made of solid oak it has perspex pegs with anti slip rings. It is designed to hold keys as well as scarves and jackets. Not on the High Street sells it for £65.
Ikea is always a good place to try for storage units. This bench with shoe storage costs £45 and is ideal if you live in a house where shoes regularly fill up the hall. The wood is of an antique effect and it has plenty room for shoes and boots.
Hallways come in all sizes and shapes. Some are big enough for a desk or table, either for a computer or to simply keep flowers on. This contemporary Macassar style glass desk has been designed by Jamie Graham. It has been created by applying glass over a wooden Macassar ebony-style cabinet and features 2 slim line drawers. Graham and Green sell it for £350.
This wavelength hall mirror is pretty impressive looking, handcrafted with a stunning edging. It is available for £54.99 from Homesdirect 365.This is a mirror to check your outfit in as you head out the door.
Halls can be dark places and a strong light is often needed. A standing lamp can really light up the space. This contemporary floor standing lamp with inline foot switch has a polished chrome metal framework, a black fabric shade and clear crystal glass mould. The lamp costs £318 from Haysom Interiors.
The list would not be complete without an umbrella stand. Not on the High Street sells this leather umbrella stand, beautifully handcrafted with leather carry straps. It comes in two sizes – the wide one is antique tan and costs £160; the slim one is made of bournville brown and is £125.
House of Fraser suggest the hallway as a good place for this Arthouse black and white architecture print. The hand drawn picture, within a dark frame, is 50cm by 70cm. The price has been reduced from £65 to £52.
This Belgravia painted coat hanger with bench and cushions and two drawers has many uses. It has shelves, drawers, coat hangers, and a bench with a cushion for sitting on. Made to order, it comes fully assembled, and is made of plantataion mahogany. The piece, from Oak Furniture Solutions, is well finished, with a slightly distressed touch to the wood. At the moment there is 45% off, with the piece selling for £772.19.
