Hunkydory Home is a company we discovered via Twitter. Always on the lookout for something a bit unusual, the online boutique caught our eye because some of the accessories are quirky, novel and a little bit different. And ‘a little bit different’ is exactly how the owner Alison Ellerbrook describes the company which she launched in 2005. The site is well designed and easy to navigate, with a lovely and colourful choice of items available.
So for the latest instalment of our Shop Showcase series, we’ve chosen our wishlist of favourites from Hunkydory Home. What would be on your list?
1. Owl milk jug
First on the list is this owl milk jug. The beady eyes and beak made us smile. The white background has a tranquil feel about it – not an adjective usually associated with milk jugs we know! And the owl face brings character to the jug, and a talking point to the breakfast table. The cost of the jug is £14.99 and it holds half a pint of milk.
2.Storm table lamp
With this storm table lamp, which costs £85 from Hunkydory Home, you get the choice of either a solid oak or walnut lamp base. The striking black raindrops stand out against the white background. This is quite a large lamp – the base is 35cm tall and the lampshade is 20cm. It would be suitable if you were looking for vibrancy without wanting colour.
3. Pair of fairy tale bookends
You can choose to have this pair of fairy tale bookends in either black or white. Made using laser cut mild steel with a matte finish, the bookends feature the classic fairytale quotes ‘Once Upon A Time’ and ‘The End’ and include individually cut prince, princess and castle turret silhouettes. The price is £24.
4. Set of four birdy egg cups
Here we have a blue tit, a robin, a thrush and a wagtail. The set of four birdy egg cups are beautifully painted, each one with striking colours. Hunkydory Home sells the set for £15.
5. Turquoise giraffe lampshade
We love this turquoise giraffe lampshade. Increasingly nowadays people are wanting more neutral colours for their children’s rooms. The trend seems to be moving away from blue for a boy and pink for a girl. Admittedly this is a blue lampshade, but we think it is a colour which would look great in a child’s room which has more neutral colours. Girls would love this as much as boys. The lampshade costs £35.
6. Hello You Lovely People doormat
The picture says it all. The doormat welcomes visitors with a ‘hello you lovely people’. The mat itself is made from coco woven material and costs £24.95.
7. Raspberry tea cosy
Our childhood memories of tea cosies are of dull looking colours, quite different from this raspberry tea cosy. The crocheted tea cosy consists of a pink cover with green leaves on top. The price is £15.
8. Europe scratch map
This Europe scratch map is the poster version of TripAdvisor. The map is black and grey and when you scratch off the places you have visited they are revealed in blue. The map costs £15.95.
9. Melamine tiger plate by Ingela Arrhenius
‘Cheerful, colourful and fun’ is how Hunkydory Home describes this melamine tiger plate by Ingela Arrhenius. Costing £7.75 the green plate has a stunning tiger picture on it.
10. Streamline doorstop
Here is a doormat which is certainly different. The streamline doormat is made using layers of a birch plywood with a bright formica laminate face. Available in nine different colours – chocolate brownie, clotted cream, breaking wave, ginger snap, pea pod, sunflower, strawberry sundae, pretty in pink and deep ocean – they are designed more for inside use, such as in children’s rooms or the kitchen.
