Heading off to university can be a daunting experience and while the essentials, for example those (industrial!) pots and pans, are important, it can also be nice to have a few of those extra touches to really make a new room in a basic halls of residence feel that little bit special.
1. Wake Up & Smile Print Bed Set
This funky duvet cover would be great for brightening up any university bedroom! With the bold print on one side and a fun pattern on the reverse, either would look great on show! For those of you who need that extra comfort, you can also buy a set of two additional pillowcases for £8!
2. Flair Rugs Pixel Design Rug
The flooring in student rooms can often be basic and uninspiring, so why not add a rug to your floor? Aside from adding an instant splash of colour or pattern to your room, it also offers a cosy surface to stand on – perfect for those chilly winter mornings when you’re reluctant to get of bed for an early morning lecture! This Pixel rug fits the bill perfectly and is £33 from Amazon.
3. Cosy Skandi Collection Retro Desk Lamp
We love this retro desk lamp from Dunelm Mill! It meets all the criteria a desk lamp for a university room should: bright enough for that last minute reading before that crucial morning exam, while conversely, soft enough to provide that little bit of extra security on those first few nights away from home. With a domed head and a curved neck in a bright yellow finish, the lamp looks great too! The lamp requires a 1 x 28 watt (max) G9 bulb and costs £17.99.
4. House by John Lewis Mosaic Laundry Bag
For any new term at university, a laundry bag is a must, but it doesn’t have to be dull and hidden away in the corner of the room! This Mosaic laundry bag from John Lewis is modern and bright. Made from 100% cotton it has a handy drawstring and costs £12.
5. Wooden Pencil Sharpener Desk Tidy
Stationery remains essential, even in this modern age, and this creative pencil sharpener desk tidy, available from Paperchase, would be a great place to store all those free pens amassed during Fresher’s Week! Priced at £17.50, it could liven up an otherwise dull desk.
6. George Home Happiness is Homemade Blue Mug
Mugs are a student essential. This one comes with a cheery motivational message to brighten up your morning. The mug is a bargain at only £2 from Asda.
7. Rainbow Fabric Bunting from Etsy
A useful form of decor for student rooms, bunting is widely available and easy to put up. If you like the shabby chic style of designers such as Cath Kidston, there are lots of pale patterned bunting available, or you could go for a bolder, contemporary option, like this gorgeous rainbow coloured fabric bunting.
Of course, if you’re a dab hand with fabrics and fancy putting your own creative touch into your room decor, then you could have a go at making your own bunting. Check out eBay for bunting kits and ideas.
8. Collage Photoline
Available from Next, at a price of £22, this notice board is a great alternative to a traditional picture frame and is perfect for hanging memories old and new! The handy pegs make it easy to change the pictures, so as term progresses those cherished pictures of loved ones back home may well disappear under a plethora of concert tickets and somewhat questionable selfies!
9. Trivial Pursuit Master Game
Having a board game perched on a shelf can be a great ice breaker. This master edition of Trivial Pursuit from John Lewis, priced at £39.99, would test even the brightest minds! A board game could also make a great gift to celebrate achieving that well earned university place.
10. Doodle Tablecloth
I’ve started so I’ll finish… this doodle tablecloth from Paperchase could be great fun in a communal kitchen at all hours of the day and night. It comes with eight pens that easily wash-out so the tablecloth can be coloured in again and again! It is priced at £35.
